Following the recent technical fault with two submarine cables that have caused the MTN Internet to slow across a number of African nations. MTN Nigeria is now giving out 500MB, 200MB or 100MB free data as a means of compensating all customers after they resolved all issues with their internet service.

In a statement released by the telco, it said that the goodwill bonus will be sent to the data account of customers. Now, MTN has started fulfilling its promise by giving out free data to customers.

Some customers claimed to have received 500MB FREE Data as compensation, while others received 200MB free data. The reason for disbursing different free data bonuses to customers is best known to them.

MTN Nigeria is sending text messages for the customers to take note of their free data, here is the sample of that SMS: "Yello, our internet service has been restored. Thank you for your patience. Enjoy 100MB FREE as a token of our appreciation. Valid for 2 days. Dial *131*4# to check."

If you don't receive any SMS concern this free data, simply dial *131*4# to check your bonus data or check your bundle balances via the MyMTN app.

The bonus data valid for just 2 days.

This must go round to all customers. If you was not compensated yet, just be patient, I believe MTN will soon remember you too.

In its battle to remain applicable in Nigeria's pay-TV market, StarTimes has cut down the costs of its decoder and reception apparatus for new endorsers ready to buy the kit with one-month free membership successful. The offer has commenced since January 15, 2020.

Google is reportedly making a new mobile unified communications app designed specifically for business users.

Based on the report we gathered from The Information. The Google Mobile app for businesses will combine several of the search giant's standalone applications and technologies. The Information spoke with two people that have used the application as well as three others who were briefed on the product.

The new communications app will combine the company's video conferencing app Hangouts Meet with its instant messaging app Hangouts Chat. The app will also include Gmail for communications over email as well as Google's cloud storage service Google Drive.

One app for all your business needs
Google's unified communications app for business is apparently going through internal testing at Google at the moment and people familiar with the matter said that Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian shared details regarding the app at a conference earlier this month with Google Cloud team members and business partners.

The search giant, Google has announced its own short video platform named Tangi. Unlike TikTok, Google’s new Tangi platform will basically focus on providing DIY videos for people.

YouTube has always been the Go-To platform for any form of the video tutorial you are searching for over the years while TikTok was the world's second-most downloaded app in 2019, but Google is about to change the narrative with this new app named Tangi.

The Tangi app has been developed by Google's in-house incubator, Area 120. "Itís an experimental social video sharing app with quick DIY videos that help people learn new things every day," is how Tangi founder, Coco Mao, describes the app. The app's name is inspired by the words TeAch aNd GIve and "tangible"— things you can make.

You can find tutorials on Art, Cooking, DIY, Fashion and Beauty, and Lifestyle categories. The technology category is not yet included in the app.

Where Can I download Tangi?
For now, Tangi is only available for iOS users and the web view through tangi.co, with the Android version soon to come. While its concept is very much similar to TikTok and newly launched Byte, the major difference is in the fact that the platform will render help to people in terms of providing them with short video clips.

We don’t understand why Google had to neglect its mobile platform for the iOS platform.

The app is still under experiment, and I’m sure that if the app doesn’t meet Google’s expectation, they’ll shut it down.

Telecom subscribers in Nigeria are not smiling at all as they angrily porting their mobile numbers from one network operator to another due to the poor services

Recall that Mobile Number Portability (MNP), which was launched in Nigeria on April 22, 2013, across all networks, is designed to offer subscribers the opportunity to port their GSM numbers from one network to another, without losing their original numbers. Migration is free of charge and can only be done once in every 90 days.

The move was also meant to push the network operators to buckle up with the quality of service provided, as risked losing their market due to poor services.

According to the latest industry statistics, about 121,154 customers dump their beloved network providers in the hunt for enhanced quality of service.

Statistics obtained from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), showed that the quartet of MTN, Globacom, Airtel, and 9Mobile lost 121, 154 subscribers, but accommodated 139, 021 in terms of those who ported into their networks.

During the whole of 2019, Airtel was mostly affected with about 49, 867 subscribers porting to other networks. Globacom lost 32,327 customers, MTN and 9Mobile lost 19, 535 and 19,425 subscribers respectively.

But in terms of subscribers who ported into the networks, 9Mobile had the highest figure with 77, 492 telephone users who preferred the network over others. Airtel came second with some 30,026 customers coming in. MTN is third with 23, 851 users, while Globacom was only able to attract 7,653 subscribers.

Wonders never cease. Nigerian Telecoms providers now bidding every subscriber to pay a tax of 7.5%. Either for sending SMS, purchasing data or making calls.

Last month, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the country’s finance bill into law, with a sweeping effect on Nigeria’s fiscal laws. The government believed that the new tax regime will not adversely affect Nigerians, but that seems not to be authentic.

Subscribers are already complaining bitterly on social media that the VAT shouldn’t apply to calls and data, but apparently, the telecoms vow to be dumb regarding it.

So we try to experiment how much VAT is charged on Calls, and this is what we got after placing a 6 seconds call across to a friend. For 6 seconds calls, I was charged N2. 67k and for 10sec call, I was charged N5.

Below is the pop-up message received by a subscriber, after making calls.

For SMS that was supposed to be N4, it is now N4.10 for every SMS you send.

Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has notified Nigerians on the application of the new VAT rate on all purchased telecommunication products and services with effect from the 1st of February 2020.

In accordance with the Finance bill 2019 signed on 13th January 2020, the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate has been revised from 5% to 7.5% with effect from 00:00 Hrs 1st February 2020.
