  • Recharge your MTN SIM card with N300 airtime.
  • After installing the MyMTN app from Google Play or iOS App Store, launch it.
  • Look at the top in the app, tap Mega Deal Zone
  • Crack The Egg page will display to you, tap on Bundle and you’ll get a message like this “Get 1.5GB Data for as low as N300 only…

The validity period for this plan is just 7 days. And if you are having data before you activate this plan, the bonus on this plan will be exhausted before your initial normal data.

WhatsApp Crosses the Mark of 2 Billion Users

The Facebook-owned app announced today it has crossed the mark of 2 billion users, up from 1.5 billion it revealed 2 years ago. It also remains free of ads and does not charge its users any fee.

The announcement today makes WhatsApp only the second app from Facebook to join the two-billion-users club. (Facebook’s marquee app has 2.5 billion users.) In an earnings call in late January, Facebook also noted that there were 2.26 billion users that opened either Facebook, Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp each day, up from 2.2 billion last quarter. The family of apps sees 2.89 billion total monthly users, up 9% year-over-year.

WhatsApp founded 11 years ago and sold to Facebook for $19 billion six years ago. 3 years back, it reached the mark of 1 billion active users.

2 years back, India blamed the company heavily because of a video of people who were perceived as child kidnappers were circulated widely on the platform, which led to several lynchings in the country.

Last year, it was caught in the storm as NSO Group, an Israel-based security company, used a flaw in WhatsApp to target journalists and activists across the world. Later, in October, Facebook sued the Israeli firm.

Government across the world have pushed WhatsApp to allow traceability to track the origin of a potentially problematic message. However, the company has stood firm till now and said this function would require them to break the encryption and put the privacy of customers at risk.

In an interview published with the Wall Street Journal, Will Cathcart, CEO of WhatsApp, said “the company’s focus on encryption and privacy communications was“the right model” for messaging, despite the commercial and regulatory complications.”

Dark Mode Puts in Facebook Lite App Globally

Dark mode looks super amazing. It has been launched on many popular apps, as well as an optional theme on your smartphone.

To improve and maximize the user experience, Facebook created the Lite version of its app. Now, the FB Lite app is ahead of all others and has dark mode available globally.

However, other apps in Facebook’s family have been more progressive in this respect. Messenger, for example, got a dark mode about a year ago, while Instagram jumped on the bandwagon sometimes in October last year.

Users of Facebook Lite app are testifying to seeing the dark mode option, and here is how to activate it.

How to Activate Facebook Lite Dark Mode
To get it working, click on the hamburger menu in the top bar and scroll until you see the Dark Mode toggle right below the Settings option. Flip it on, and the app will switch to a gray UI that uniformly covers all app sections.

I’ve not seen it on my own device yet, the option has appeared for several users. We believe with time, Dark Mode will be rolling out globally to all Facebook app users.

For those who don’t have Facebook Lite app installed on their device, you can download it from the Google Play store here.

Mozilla Unveils VPN Services For Android, Windows 10 and more

We've known about Mozilla's VPN service for a brief period now, and now the organization has discharged an Android application for beta testing.

Mozilla has already released a browser extension for Firefox that provides free access to the service in the US, but apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebook are also planned.

The monthly cost is currently set at $4.99 (about £4 / AU$7), but Mozilla describes this as a "limited-time beta pricing", so it's safe to assume that this will increase when the service launches properly.

The apps serve as true VPNs and offer full-device protection; they aren't just proxies that handle data from your web browser. They can be used to protect up to five devices as part of the monthly fee, and Mozilla says you'll be able to choose from servers in more than 30 countries.

Join the queue
You can download the Android app from Google Play Store Here if you have an invite to the beta program, which you can sign up for here – but bear in mind that there is currently a waiting list.

If you make it to the top of the waiting list, Mozilla will also provide access to Windows 10 app. Beta apps will also be made available for other platforms, but Mozilla hasn't yet indicated when these may be released.

Google Introduces Android 11 – Here is All You Need to Know

$

0
Android 10 which was released last year was a major move for the operating system. Besides the fact that we got the hotly anticipated dark mode and significant changes to the app permissions, Android 10 also denoted Google's takeoff from dessert names and introduced another Android logo/brand.

Android 10 was a cycle of growth and maturity for the operating system, and those equivalent standards are being continued to Android 11. We're as yet a couple of months out from the final build been accessible for everybody, but with a developer preview now out in the wild, we have a smart thought of where Google needs to take Android in 2020.

Eager to learn all about what Android 11 is packing? Here's All you need to know!
  • Developer Preview 1 is out
  • Top features
  • 5G Network is a big focus
  • Tons of messaging improvements
  • Permissions keep getting better
  • You can flash it right now
  • New form factors
  • Security
  • Updates and other features
  • The final build is coming in Q3
Developer Preview 1 is Now Available
On February 19, Google kicked off the hype train by releasing the first developer preview for Android 11 — giving us an early look at its biggest features and new logo.
Source: Google

Based on what we know so far, Android 11 looks to be a fairly modest year-over-year improvement compared to Android 10. At least in Developer Preview 1, there aren't any major UI changes (though this could change later on). We'll dive deeper into some of the biggest features below, with some of them being improvements to how Android handles 5G connections, support for more display types, and more powerful permission controls.

That may sound kind of boring, but don't check out quite yet. Google often keeps changes and updates coming with each new developer preview, meaning Developer Preview 1 is not indicative of what Android 11 will look like in its final form.

These are the top features

5G Network is a Big Focus
5G finally started making its way to people last year, and throughout 2020, more and more folks are going to connect to the next generation of wireless data. To help that process be as smooth as can be, Android 11 adds a very important "Dynamic Meterdness API."

That may not sound very exciting on paper, but it essentially allows phones to take full advantage of all the power 5G brings.

If the API detects that you're connected to an unlimited 5G signal, you'll access the highest possible quality for videos and graphics. The potential for 5G is pretty darn cool, and this API ensures you take full advantage of the speeds available to you.

Lots of improvements for messaging
Reading through Google's initial press release for the first Android 11 developer preview, it's obvious that this update is doing a lot to improve Android's messaging experience. In fact, there are three core upgrades that should make a big difference in your day-to-day use.

First on the list, we have chat bubbles. Similar to what Facebook's offered for years with its Messenger app on Android, chat bubbles in Android 11 will hide your ongoing conversations in little bubbles on the side of your screen. You can move the bubbles around, and tapping on them will reveal that specific conversation. The Bubbles API is being made available for all messaging apps, with Google encouraging developers to adopt it.

In another effort to make sure you can get to your messages as quickly as possible, Android 11 introduces a dedicated conversation section in your notification shade that'll offer instant access to any ongoing conversations you have. In theory, this should help make your messages stand out from other notifications.

Speaking of messages and notifications, Android 11 makes it possible to send images when replying to a message directly from the notification shade.

One-Time Permissions
Looking back on Android 10, one of its highlights was its improved handling of app permissions. Android 10 gave users more control over applications and what they could access, and Android 11 keeps this train rolling with a wonderful new addition.

Now, when an app asks for permission to use sensitive features like your location, microphone, or camera, you can choose to only grant it access on a one-time basis. The app will be able to use that permission during that instance of you using the app, but as soon as you leave it, the permission is revoked. The next time you use the app and it wants to use that permission, it needs to be granted access again.

Giving apps permission to these aspects of your phone should not be taken lightly, so we're thrilled to see Google giving users more control over their data like this.

You can Flash Android 11 on your phone (but you shouldn't)
Android 11 currently exists as a developer preview, and right now, it is in the earliest stage that we'll see. You can put it on your phone if you want, but we'd advise against that.

First of all, you need to manually flash Android 11 Developer Preview 1 to get it on your phone in the first place. Unlike later builds of the OS, you can't just download an over-the-air update.

Furthermore, the purpose of this initial developer preview is so developers can start working with the new Android version and get their apps ready for its final release. In other words, it's not meant for regular use on your daily driver.

With all of that out of the way, if you're dead-set on putting Android 11 on your phone right now, we have a guide walking you through the process of exactly what you need to do.

New Form Factors
As more devices with unique designs enter the market, such as vertically- and horizontally-folding smartphones, Android has evolved to include support for these new form factors.

Android 11 includes APIs which let developers optimise their applications to support these form factors, including waterfall and pinhole screen designs.

Security
Android 11 will sport improved security features, from expanded biometrics support to secure ID storage.

These changes are detailed below:
  • Biometrics– BiometricPrompt now supports three authenticator types with different levels of granularity and can be more easily integrated with different app architectures.
  • Platform hardening– Improvements to the protection of security-critical components and heap pointer tagging for catching memory issues.
  • Identity credentials– Support for the secure storage and retrieval of identification documents, such as mobile driving licenses.
Android 11 will also allow applications to share data more securely through a Blobstore Manager.

Updates and Other Features
Google said it has been working to reach a wider range of devices more quickly with its updates.

“We’re also working to make updates faster and smoother by prioritizing app compatibility as we roll out new platform versions,” the company said.

We have a few months to go before the final build
Source: Google

Android 11 may technically be available right now, but we have a ways to go before it's ready for everyone.

Developer Preview 1 is the current version, and Google will release two more between now and April. Once May rolls around, the first public beta will be made available and see two subsequent updates that focus on platform stability. Then, in Q3, the final version of Android 11 will be released to the masses.

In total, that'll see Google releasing six betas/previews leading up to Android 11 in its final form.

Developers can now visit the Android 11 developer site, download a system image for the Pixel 2, 3, 3a, or 5, and try out the new operating system.

12 Ways To Protect Android/Tablet Devices From Malware Infection

$
0
0
Since the introduction of modern computers, malicious software or malware has been an omnipresent issue. Viruses, Trojans, rootkits, spyware, keyloggers and several others of the like continue to assault your computing devices all the time, looking for vulnerabilities and loopholes in your defenses to get through. Generally, users have become aware enough to deploy some form of protection on their desktops and notebooks, and while infections continue to plague the computing world, they’re significantly reduced in impact.

Smartphones today are nothing short of portable computers as well, and just like that, are prone to malware attacks. Hard as it may seem to believe, developers do spend time creating Smartphone malware that would let them access your personal information, exploit personal data and otherwise do damage to your device. Android Device is a fast-growing mobile platform with apps exceeding 600,000 in the Google Play Store, and believe me when I tell you that an assessment puts over 100,000 of them as “questionable”. While most users don’t pay much attention to it, it’s imperative that you secure your Android smartphone or tablet against the growing threat of mobile malware. They say prevention is better than cure, and in this post, we’ll provide some basic pointers on how to achieve that.

Ways to Keep your Android/Tablet Device Secure
There are easy ways to reduce the risk of infection in your Android. Most of these ways are simply common sense. Developers and specific cell phone manufacturers do encourage their customers to use the proper download applications and widgets.
    1. Download Only From Official Stores
When downloading apps, prefer the well-reputed channels, mainly Google Play Store and the Amazon App Store. Google implements a rudimentary “bouncer” to ward off malware, and the rest is taken care of by the very active Android user community. Hence, these two sources are your most reliable ones.
      2. Keep Installation of Apps from Unknown Sources at “Off”
Unless you’re a power user, it’s highly advisable to keep the installation of apps from Unknown Sources at “off” in the device’s settings. This will help ensure that nothing enters the system except through official channels.
          3. Rooted Devices are More Susceptible
Most advanced users choose to root their Android devices, be extra cautious about granting Superuser access to any app. Make sure you understand the purpose of the SU access and trust the developer enough to grant it. This is the highest level of access that anyone (or anything) can have on your Android device, so be really careful with this one.

          4. Install an Antivirus/Security App on Your Android Smartphone
A lot of capable contenders are available in the Google Play Store for that purpose, with more notable ones being Avast! Free Mobile Security, Lookout Mobile Security, AVG Mobile Security, Kaspersky, and Norton Mobile Security, just to name a few. There is a different feature-set offered by each, so you have room to weigh your options carefully before making a decision to go with one.

          5. It is Important to Read App reviews and See ratings before downloading
Read app reviews and see ratings before you choose to download anything. If it’s something from a renowned developer, you’re less likely to run into trouble as opposed to an app with hardly any downloads and just 2-3 reviews. As a rule of thumb, I don’t prefer apps with a rating of less than at least 3 stars.
              6. Examine the Permissions that an App is Asking For, During Installation
Carefully examine the permissions that an app is asking for, and use your own judgment to decide whether you want that app or not. E.g A puzzle game asking to access your contacts and the phone app is never really a good idea, and neither is a torch app seeking internet permission. Discard apps that seem shady – they’re usually not worth risking personal information over.
                  7. Keep Your Phone Locked Always
While not strictly a malware protection measure, it’s still a good idea to keep your phone locked for security. Someone else gaining access to your device might be able to install undesired software before you reclaim access, and hence, causing you to remain unaware of the whole deal until it’s too late. Likewise, a remote wipe app should also be there, should you ever encounter a scenario where normal access to the device gets blocked by the malware infection.

                  8. Never access links embedded in mass-broadcast messages/emails on your phone.
You never know what’s hidden underneath a URL, and it’s harder to check that on a Smartphone as opposed to a traditional computer. Phishing scams thrive under unrestricted access through your web browser.

                  9. Beware of Fake Apps Even on Play Store
On the Play Store, there are loads of fake apps designed with the intention of infecting your device and stealing your private information. Some apps are designed only to push ads to yourSmartphone. As a matter of fact, most popular apps often have similar ones that are actually fake. You should be careful with these sorts of apps.
                    10. Avoid Pirated Apps
If you love the cracks and pirated apps, your device may become infected without you even knowing it. Pirated apps most often carry Malware strands. Besides, you’re not helping the developers who work hard trying to create these games and apps. Saving $0.99 isn’t worth it, really.

                    11. Porn is the Most Efficient Source of Malware Delivery
I’m in no position to judge you or tell you what to do with your device, but it has been proven that pornographic sites are the most efficient when it comes to infecting your device with malware. Well, you know what to do… be careful with sites you visit.

                    12. Stay Updated
Be on your toes so far as updates are concerned. This is one way in which manufacturers and carriers ensure that you remain protected from Malware attacks. These updates can include enhancements, bug fixes, new features each of which are designed to keep your system in tune with the right way to tackle the malicious attacks. Apart from updating your apps, be sure your device operating system is also up-to-date.

                    Conclusion
Following the above steps will help you ensure that your device remains secure, safe from malware, and most importantly, exclusively yours. Do you have a tip that we should’ve included here and missed? Drop us a comment below.

[UPDATED - 26/02/2020] MTN Nigeria has chosen to delight existing customers on the MyMTN app platform by offering them free 2GB data for referring 10 persons to register on the app.

I'm pretty sure that the regular readers of this blog are already familiar with the MyMTN App.
Initially, when you download the MyMTN app, you’ll be compensated with 500MB worth of free data, but MTN has just introduced a user-friendly referral program to all her subscribers and you have the opportunity to earn up to 2GB data for free!

If a user of the MyMTN app invites another person, (the referral will get free 200MB and the person that refers to will get 500MB). So if the referral invites up to (10 people) on his/her contact, the referral will get massive free 2GB of data instantly.

Arithmetically, 5 referrals will give you a whooping 1GB Data and 10 Referrals will give you 2GB Free data.

Below is how you can get started.

                    For new users:
                    1. Download the app on play store
                    2. Sign up for it by using your MTN number (make sure it’s in the phone for you to have access to the OTP code which will be sent to confirm if it's you)
                    3. Once verified, Scroll down to MTN Refer and Earn
                    4. Choose contacts that you want to refer.

                    2. A screen will prompt up, tap on “INVITE NOW”.
                    3. When you invite 10 people to the app, you will be given 2GB data.
                    4. Choose the contact that you want to invite.
Note: Make sure your referrals are not existing customers, otherwise, none of you will be compensated.

YouTube Music Now Allows Cloud Uploads and File Management as Google Play Music Shots Down

                    $
                    0
                    0
Google has finally declared that it has enabled users to upload personal music collection to the YouTube Music library by uploading their songs and albums. This move will surely help close the feature gap between YouTube Music and Play Music.

The long-anticipated feature set started rolling out quietly last week and once enabled, it allows users to upload their own music files into the cloud. You can find the new upload option on both the browser and app versions of the service. Available in full quality and listenable offline.

Google was generous enough to open the upload feature to both paying and non-paying users of the app. Adding a song or giving it a thumbs up/down will not have any impact on the algorithmic-based playlists. Casting uploaded music to other speakers is as easy as songs that are part of the service.

All users also get Premium features for uploaded music like music plays in the background, ad-free, and offline play. Potentially a good move for Google as it could lure potential additional paying subscribers after playing with the Premium features.

                    How it Works?
According to Google's support page, "Add your personal music collection to your YouTube Music library by uploading your songs and albums. Once your music is uploaded, you can use YouTube Music to play your uploaded music as part of your listening experience."

Users can upload their own music through two routes:
                    • They can drag their files to music.youtube.com or they can visit music.youtube.com,
                    • Click their account, and Upload.
The website supports FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, and WMA. In efforts to make the library option more accessible, Google will let everyone — not just YouTube Music Premium subscribers — take advantage of this long-overdue launch which runs without ads and can be accessed offline.

Note that YouTube Music not yet available in Nigeria, to access the website, you need a VPN with a US IP address.

Fare Thee Well, Google Play Music
The most noticeable takeaway from the company's announcement is that Google Play Music is finally shutting down. This becomes obvious in the nugget below:
If you are looking to transfer your entire Google Play Music library, stay tuned – we will be providing a way to seamlessly transfer your music. Nothing is changing with Google Play Music right now. When we do replace Google Play Music with YouTube Music [emphasis ours], we’ll be sure to give you plenty of advance notice.
Migration from Google Play Music to YouTube Music was inevitable. For some time now, Google has been trying to compete with Spotify and Apple Music, and while it hasn't seen any groundbreaking success yet, the company's decision to give YouTube Music the best features of Google Play Music, including user uploads — while leaning hard into the well-known brand — might just do the trick.

                    SIM Validity and Eligibility
All MTN valid Sim cards can access this new offer, but not every MTN User is eligible for this new data offer.

The offer is valid just for MTN customers who have not performed any rechargeable transactions on their Sim card for the past 30 days and above.

The subscription code stated above works on all MTN Sim cards, but that is not the code to check the eligibility of the new MTN Welcome Back Special Data Plans.

After dialing the code stated above, you are directed to the offer page that lists the available offers, but when you choose an option you’re directed to the next page which only tells you “Dear Customer, Enjoy data offers on MTN Deal zone, Dial *131*1#” and when you do so, you are directed to the main MTN data bundle offers that give you 1GB for N1000, 1.5GB for N1,200 and so on.

How to Check Sim Eligibility for MTN Welcome Back Special Data Plans
To check if your MTN Sim card is eligible, simply dial *559*65#

                    Can I Accumulate the Data?

For those that are eligible for the offer, unfortunately, you can't subscribe over and over to a particular plan at the same time, you need to wait until your current plan expired before you can re-subscribe to that same data plan. However, you know that the offer is split into 3, which is 4GB, 1GB, and 250MB data. You have the opportunity to subscribe to all of the 3 plans at once. For instance, when you subscribed to the plan of 1GB for N200 and you still wish to subscribe to 4GB data of N1000 before the expire time of your initial 1GB, you have access to do so.

Will I still be able to subscribe for Other MTN data bundle plan?

It seems Nokia is returning back the much-loved XpressMusic feature phone.
HMD Global will consistently be acknowledged as the company that breathed life back into Nokia smartphones. Aside from the welcoming Android-powered smartphones, the Finnish company additionally presented several feature phones with the Nokia Brand.

Furthermore, the Chinese regulatory agency TENAA uncovers another feature telephone with a TA-1212 model number. It's a bar phone with a sprinkle of red, could it be the restoration of Nokia XpressMusic?

The upcoming feature phone offers a basic specification, similar to Nokia 110 (2019) and not one of the KaiOS powered devices like the recent Flip and Tough handsets.

This is explained by the rather low 0.36GHz single-core processor, just 8MB of RAM and 16MB of storage. It also includes a microSD card up to 32GB, but that is probably for the MP3 player functionality.

The feature phone boasts a 2.4-inch display with 240 x 320 pixels of resolution. The phone is rather thick, though, with 13.1mm considering its battery has only 1,200mAh in size. At least, the smartphone is super light with just 88 grams.

There’s a camera on the back, but it’s nearly unusable with just 0.3MP. According to the specs table, it can’t do video recording, not even a choppy QVGA video like old S50 phones. We can’t express our feelings about that. There’s an LED flash, which certainly helps as a good flashlight and definitely counts as a feature in a phone of this pedigree.

This specific Nokia Express music phone will be restricted to a 2G network, it might not really be so relevant to many.
