Astro Slide 5G is an Android Mini-laptop Phone for Keyboard Addicts

Planet Computers has just announced the first 5G handheld device with a full physical keyboard on their Twitter official handle and its Indiegogo campaign has already received more backing than the original goal. The Astro Slide is brimming with attractive features, including its transforming ability, super-fast MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chipset, full backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 6 capability, and 48 MP main camera.

If you’ve been waiting for a 5G smartphone with a physical keyboard, get ready for this new device named Astro Slide 5G smartphone.

Astro Slide 5G is not a small device, but then it’s not your typical Android smartphone. On the front, there’s a 6.53-inch touchscreen, running at 2340 x 1080 resolution, which pushes up and then tilts to reveal a physical keyboard with backlighting.

That way, you get a regular phone when you just want to browse the internet, look at social networks, or take photos, but a miniature laptop when you need to do some serious text entry. It follows Planet Computers’ previous Cosmo Communicator and the company’s original Gemini PDA, which promised similar flexibility. However, this new hinge mechanism has some significant advantages.

Probably the biggest is the convenience of single-handed use. The Astro Slide is certainly not a small, or thin, phone – it’s 15mm thick, whereas a Galaxy S20 Ultra is 8.8mm – but with its primary display on the outside, it can still theoretically be used one-handed. The company’s previous models closed like clamshells, which meant the main display couldn’t be seen.

The Cosmo Communicator added an external secondary display, but that was only really useful for notifications and the like. This Astro Slide, in contrast, will be fully usable as an Android 10 phone whether it’s opened or closed.
There’s a 48-megapixel rear camera, along with a front camera for selfies. Astro Slide also has a fingerprint sensor, a microSD slot, and NFC support. Unusually, there are not only two nano-SIM card slots, but eSIM support as well. That could mean potentially three lines of service on a single device.

Inside, the Astro Slide uses MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 chipset. Announced last November, the octa-core chipset pairs four performance cores with four efficiency cores, together with a Mali-G77 GPU. MediaTek also has a new AI Processing Unit, WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.1, along with its 5G.

The problem is, what the Dimensity 1000 doesn’t have is mmWave 5G support. Instead, the chip-maker has focused on sub-6GHz networks, a decision that makes sense for many global markets but has disappointing consequences for the US. Verizon’s fastest 5G service, for example, is based on mmWave, and while sub-6 is currently more ubiquitous in the US, it’s also much slower.

Even the base configuration of the Astro Slide will have at least 6GB of memory and 128GB of storage. Later on, Planet Computers says, there’ll be a multi-boot option for those wanting a Linux OS alongside Android. The battery is 4,000 mAh, which the company says should be enough for a full day of use, and supports wireless charging; there are two USB-C ports, stereo speakers, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Price
The Astro Slide is expected to retail at around $907 (approx. 332,869.00 Nigerian Naira), though early backers can snag one from $544. If all goes to plan, the company says, it hopes to begin shipping in March 2021.

What would it take for you to buy a phone with a physical keyboard? Let us know in the comments!

Office 365 is now Microsoft 365, new Outlook features and screen time app coming Android

Microsoft launched Office 365 on June 28, 2011, as a new subscription model for the company’s popular suite of office applications, but it has gradually expanded in scope since then. Today it was announced that Office 365 is being renamed to Microsoft 365, and there are new features for both consumers and large organizations alike.

Most of the new features announced for Microsoft 365 are for the desktop: a new editing service built into Word and Outlook.com, an updated presenter mode in PowerPoint, and so on. There were a few topics of interest for Android, though. The Play My Emails feature that arrived in the Android Outlook app last year will soon offer improved search:
Play My Emails can help you catch up and act on what’s new in your inbox whether you are mid-commute or getting ready in the morning, so that you can be fully present when you are home. To further enable hands-free activities, you can now use Microsoft Search that recognizes natural language on iOS and Android. Simply find your results faster and easier by using language you use every day to filter and narrow your search—just speak it or type it. The new search functionality and Play My Emails availability on Android will begin rolling out in the coming months.
For families subscribed to Microsoft 365, a new application called ‘Microsoft Family Safety’ will enter limited preview “in the coming months.”

The app will manage screen time across Windows PCs, Android, and Xbox, and also make it easy to check the locations of family members. Microsoft specifically mentioned that “we don’t share your information with third parties.”

Finally, Microsoft also revealed that its Teams messaging platform will be available for Microsoft 365 family plans.

Airtel and MTN Announces Free SMS - For All Customers to Connect with their Loved Ones During this Lockdown

At this critical time, many Nigerians are lamenting for the telcos, demanding for the cut down of data plans price in the country considering the fact that lockdown and stay at home directive are implemented, but it seems telecommunication providers in Nigeria are adamant and I don’t think they are ready to reduce the price of their data plans or offer free data.

Alternatively, Airtel and MTN have got us covered with the part where we need to connect with our loved one via SMS, this is not too great for some of us, but it’s still something for us to hang onto during this period. Airtel & MTN announce free SMS to all customers to connect with loved ones

The free SMS Airtel and MTN are offering to their customers can't be sent to all your friends and families across any network. For the MTN users, you get to enjoy 300 SMS for a month with which you can send only 10 SMS/day. You need to receive this message first before you can confirm that you’re eligible for this offer;
Stay CONNECTED with your loved ones WITHOUT using your CREDIT! Enjoy FREE 300 SMS for the next one month (10 SMS/day) to ALL NETWORKS
While the Airtel users have unlimited access to free SMS to any network. The only thing that you should take note of is that a Fair Usage policy applies to prevent network congestion at this time when network stability is paramount to keep everyone connected.

However, Nigerians have reacted to the offer; see it as an insult to the Nigerian people. In this present age where about 90% of subscribers make use of instant messaging to communicate with their love ones which in return requires data; Airtel and MTN want to take subscribers back to the ancient times of SMS.
Adesola Idowu: Thanks for the tip and thanks for the 10 free daily SMS. But please, can you do something as regards data? Something like charge reduction or free data. It’s needful. Thanks

Jerry Phil: Make una make cutdatapriceunadey give one mumu tips, wetin concern me?

With this move, let's hope the telco providers will give everyone free data during this period, and we hope that this virus gets eradicated very soon, stay safe!

Nigeria Now Gets The First-ever Bitcoin ATM, More to Come Soon

If there’s a place where cryptocurrencies draw significantly more attention than anywhere else right now, it has to be Nigeria. Africa’s largest economy is driven by its oil exports, expanding manufacturing, financial services, communications, and information technology sectors, but also by a tech-savvy generation that asks Google about Bitcoin more than its peers in other countries. Despite the progress, however, cash remains the only option for many Nigerians to buy cryptocurrency. New services are aiming to satisfy that demand.

Nigeria now has at least one operational Bitcoin Automated Teller Machine (BATM). For various reasons, including security concerns, there’s only a couple of dozen teller devices supporting cryptocurrencies in the whole of Africa, the Coinatmradar map shows. According to local media reports, Nigeria got its first BATM only this year. The device was deployed in Dazey Lounge & Bar in Lagos in early January by a local company called Blockstale.

The BATM has been manufactured in China but has an “Africa-focused design,” which takes into account the safety problem in the country, featuring an alarm system, a remote tracker and bio scanners to make it theft and vandal-proof, as the Weetracker news outlet reported.

The ATM, which the first in Nigeria, and also the fifteenth in the entire continent was installed at a Lounge in Lagos.

Chief Executive Daniel Adekunle revealed that Blockstale is gearing up to install more cryptocurrency ATMs across Nigeria and in neighboring countries. The company has already delivered five more machines that will be deployed in Lagos by the end of the month and will then move on to Abuja towards the next quarter. These are two-way devices supporting both purchases and sales of BTC for the moment, but more currencies will be added later. Blockstale is also considering the introduction of a mobile top-up feature allowing users to reload their prepaid mobile phones using crypto. “Nigerians have trust issues, meaning we prefer to have direct interactions because we believe that this is safe, secure, and best practice to avoid loss of funds,” Adekunle commented, adding:
We operate in a cash-based economy even though our banks want us to go cashless. These BATMs serve as an on-ramp for users looking into cashing out their digital assets or having quick access to purchase digital assets with cash securely.
At the moment, South Africa is home to seven crypto ATMs, Ghana has two, while Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Djibouti and Botswana each have a single terminal. With a Bitcoin ATM in Nigeria, the crypto community can expect more developments and widespread adoption in the future.

Recent weeks have seen about 220 Bitcoins or $1.38 million worth of peer-to-peer (P2P) trade between bitcoin and Nigeria’s currency on LocalBitcoins.

The number of Nigerians on LocalBitcoins has dropped by about 50% since the peer to peer platform strengthened it’s knowing your customer requirements around September 2019.

However, Nigeria is still topping Google searches for ‘Bitcoin’, driving nearly twice the traffic as the second-ranked country, Austria, according to Google Trends.

Do you think the introduction of this BATM will drive more Nigerians to Bitcoin? Share your expectations in the comments section below.

COVID-19: FG Implores Telcos to Reduce the Prices of Data and Call Rates for Nigerians

For the past few days, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has approached all Pay Subscription Broadcasters in Nigeria to decode every single neighborhood channel on their bunch in this critical time and it yields nothing up till this moment. Likewise, Nigeria's minister of communications has made a passionate plea to telecommunications companies

Dr. Isa Pantami implored telecoms service providers to further reduce the prices of data and call rates as the country fights COVID-19. This is coming after many Nigerians took to Twitter to ask telecoms service providers to give out freebies.

The minister of communications, Dr. Isa Pantami, has urged telecommunications service providers in Nigeria to further reduce the prices of data and call rates being offered subscribers in this critical time.

Since many Nigerians have been restricted to their homes following the lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus, a good number of people took to Twitter with #freedata to urge telecom companies to provide free packages, but MTN and Airtel only tried to give free SMS to all customers. You can check the details of it here.

The minister also demanded improved quality of service provided as well as checking the illegal deduction of subscribers’ data.

In such a time like this, it is not every Nigerian that can afford 1GB data as hard-up people cannot even continue feeding themselves during this coronavirus.

We hope that this COVID-19 dilemma ended in the universe very soon, stay safe!

In order to facilitate work from home, sustain business activities and create more excitement for Nigerians while the government’s stay at home order in almost every part of the country subsists, Globacom has empowered its data customers with more data as they renew their plans.

In the new offer aptly tagged Stay Home Data plan, the network is offering up to 20 percent more data for its subscribers irrespective of the data plan they purchase.

A statement released by the company said that the customer will automatically enjoy up to 20% more data when he tops up his data. The percentage of data bonus enjoyed however depends on how much data he subscribed to.

“The more data you buy, the more data bonus you enjoy. For example, a N20,000 data plan will attract up to 20% more data, while a N100 data plan will give the subscriber up to 5% more data”, the network company explained.

In the new offer, the N20,000 bundle which before now offered 115GB will now give 138GB, meaning an additional data of 23GB, which is 20% more. The N100 plan which before now gave 90MB will attract an additional 15MB which translates to 105MB data.

The statement further said that a breakdown of the additional data shows furthermore that if a subscriber buys the N500 bundle, he would now receive 1.05GB instead of the former 1GB. The N1000 bundle will now attract 2.5GB instead of the previous 2.3GB. For a N2000 bundle, the new package has 5.8GB instead of the old 5.25GB, while a N3,000 data purchase would receive a massive 10GB as against the 9GB which customers received in the old package.

The company urged its customers to take advantage of the Glo Stay Home Data plan to sustain activities in their businesses, reach out to loved ones and entertain themselves through its 4G network backed by the powerful Glo1 undersea cable, which guarantees reliable, high quality and efficient telecommunication services.

Microsoft specifically mentioned that “we don’t share your information with third parties.” Finally, Microsoft also revealed that its Teams messaging platform will be available for Microsoft 365 family plans.

The free SMS Airtel and MTN are offering to their customers can’t be sent to all your friends and families across any network. For the MTN users, you get to enjoy 300 SMS for a month with which you can send only 10 SMS/day. You need to receive this message first before you can confirm that you’re eligible for this offer;

Thanks Jerry Phil: Make una make cutdataprice una dey give one mumu tips, wetin concern me?

With this move, let’s hope the telco providers will give everyone free data during this period, and we hope that this virus gets eradicated very soon, stay safe!

Likewise, Nigeria’s minister of communications has made a passionate plea to telecommunications companies

Dr. Isa Pantami implored telecoms service providers to reduce the prices of data and call rates as the country fights COVID-19. This is coming after many Nigerians took to Twitter to ask telecoms service providers to give out freebies.
