After a long time of tests, Google as of late killed Chrome Duet, its take on a bottom bar for its mobile browser. Be that as it may, the company doesn’t seem to be entirely opposed to adding elements to more reachable spots, as another test has risen in Chrome for Android. A flag lets you add a tab strip to the bottom of the interface, similar to the experience when you use tab groups.

The flag was first introduced back in April, but now it’s made its way into the beta release of Chrome 84. Some people can enable it by copying and pasting chrome://flags/#enable-conditional-strip to the address bar or by searching for “conditional tab strip” in the flags overview and selecting “enabled.”

It looks just like the bottom tab strip you get when you use tab groups, though the difference is that it works for all of your tabs, not just those in the specific group. You’ll see small thumbnails of the currently opened websites in the strip and can switch to another tab by the tap of an icon. It’s possible to close the current one by hitting a little x, and you can open a new tab via the plus button in the bottom right corner. Up top, the classic tab switcher is still accessible when you need to see previews and website titles. I wouldn’t be surprised if that changed as Google works on this new interface, with one unified approach to multitasking in the bottom bar being the goal.

With Chrome Duet as an abandoned precedent and scrollable tabstrips for desktops “in the works” for more than two years without results, I wouldn’t hold my breath that we’ll soon see the new tab bar in Chrome’s default interface. At least we can expect the corresponding flag to make the jump to the stable version of the browser once Chrome 84 is released in about a fortnight.

Microsoft has launched new software for Windows 10 called Windows File Recovery, which allows users to recover accidentally deleted files. Windows File Recovery is a command-line tool to search drive data for deleted multiple file types which include photos, documents, videos, and several other files.

• The ability to target file names, keywords, file paths, or extensions

• Files can be recovered from HDD, SSD, USB, and memory cards

Mobile operator MTN Group launched its 5G network across major cities in South Africa and it covers areas of Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth.

The operator used various spectrum bands, including temporary spectrum assigned by communications regulator Icasa during the Covid-19 state of disaster, to launch the network.

According to MTN SA CEO Godfrey Motsa during the company’s live-streamed launch event, the telecommunication company stepping up its digital revolution with the next generation of technology with the capacity to bring about exponential improvements to the country’s economy.

“Today, from MTN’s birthplace of South Africa, we are stepping up our digital revolution with the next generation of telecommunication technology, demonstrating to all South Africans that 5G is no longer just an idea. It is here, it works and it has the capacity to bring about exponential improvements to our economy, and to the lives of the people we serve,” Motsa said.

Four bands

The chief technology and information officer Giovanni Chiarelli said, MTN will deliver 5G connectivity on four different spectrum bands:

• 3.5 GHz at 58 sites– Available in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein.
• 2,100MHz and 1,800MHz at 35 sites– Available in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
• 700MHz at 5 sites– Available in Port Alfred, Hopetown, Virginia Queenstown, and Tsantsabane
• 28GHz at 3 sites– Available in Hatfield, Edenvale, and Durban.

MTN said it is introducing the re-farming of some 4G spectrum to allow it to run 4G and 5G spectrum, at the same time, in the same band.

MTN’s service is offered in two variants – 5G home Wi-Fi and 5G mobile.

5G home Wi-Fi promises average speeds of 100Mbps and peak speeds of 500Mbps, while 5G mobile offers average speeds of 50Mbps and peak speeds of 500Mbps.

5G is essential, the fifth-generation mobile network technology which offers faster data speeds and lower latency or response time. It allows several devices to be connected at one go and in future could help in running unmanned cars and seamless communication and interconnectivity between smart devices, a process commonly called the internet of things.

Over three million applicants have enrolled for about 400,000 job spaces in the third batch of the Federal Government’s N-Power program.

It was gathered that the applicants applied for the program through the online portal of the N-Power scheme which was opened for applications on June 26, 2020.

N-Power is one of the National Social Investment Programmes of the Federal Government.

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development said on Friday that it would absorb 400,000 applicants as Batch C beneficiaries.

The humanitarian ministry’s Deputy Director, Information, Rhoda Iliya, said, “Enrolment of beneficiaries for N-power Batch C commenced on June 26, 2020 and has received over three million applications since the portal opened.

“The application process will be concluded as soon as possible to provide additional Nigerian youths access to the program.”

The humanitarian minister, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, noted that as the ministry had commenced the transition of Batch A and B N-Power beneficiaries, it would conclude activities of the independent monitors enrolled with those two batches by July 31, 2020.

MTN has become the first mobile telecom operator to introduce the eSIM service in Nigeria and indeed West Africa.

eSIM is a small chip that’s used to authenticate your identity with your carrier. Unlike the physical SIM, you do not need to insert an eSIM into your phone as it is already built into your smartphone, device, or wearable. No physical SIM cards are involved and no physical swapping required if you want to change your network.

The information on an eSIM is rewritable, which means that you can decide to change your operator with a simple phone call.
